In my never ending efforts to live life to the fullest I’m on a constant quest to be healthy and happy so that I can take advantage of every moment. As part of this search, one author from whom I draw great inspiration is Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma. I just read another of his illuminating books, Food Rules. In this book he accomplishes the gargantuan task of cutting out the jargon, excluding the propaganda and reducing the mountainous amount of mis/information out there to three simple rules for making healthy choices.
1. Eat food.
2. Mostly plants.
3. Not too much.
Without recounting the entire book (which is a fast read – easily finished in an hour or two), here’s what that means.
Eat food – Eat whole foods where the source ingredients are still recognizable. Eat food that will eventually rot. If it’s in plastic or a cardboard box and has a shelf life of months with ingredients that a third grader would have difficulty pronouncing, it’s probably not food. Fresh fruits, veges, whole grains and proteins that are still in their natural state without excessive processing are the way to go.
Mostly plants and Not too much – self explanatory I think.
What are your food rules?
