Azur Restaurant & Bistro in Shangri La Putrajaya inspires tropical dreams with its sea blue carpet, green foilage views, high ceilings and contemporary glass structures. White clothed tables and fine service make a more formal yet still friendly dining option at the hotel. Weather allowing, the outside terrace is a potentially romantic spot for a candle lit dinner for two. Scenery and service contour a calming harmonious setting for a bright lunch or evening meal.

The Western menu, with primarily Mediterranean and Italian dominion, is reasonable value, especially laid side by side with comparable restaurants in KL or other five star hotels across the country. Most items on the menu ranged from RM18 to RM60 including seafood and steak options at modest prices. Whetting our appetite, the amuse bouche of the day was a contrast of smooth and crunchy, creamy and salty with rounds of soft cream cheese coated in crushed pistachios and topped with salmon roe and caviar. A choice of warm breads soaked up the Bell Pepper Soup (RM18) – a duo of roasted red and green peppers offering a snap of sweetness, nip of spice and a zip of bitterness. Glancing down the menu we noticed, what we considered fair, prices for pastas and risottos ranging between RM25 and RM32 and mains floating between RM30 and 60RM. We tried the Grilled Supreme Fillet of Black Cod for RM50, grilled to produce a thin crisp fine outer layer but juicy flakes inside and served with tomato comfit, asparagus, forestier potato and saffron hollandaise sauce. The New Zealand Lamb Rack was our meat choice and came with ratatouille, green asparagus tips and a sweet lightly spicy mango mint chutney with a pot of black pepper sauce and potato mash for RM58. The Green Tea Brulee for RM18 twists the classic French dessert with by infusing green tea into the caramelized custard.

For thoughts of seascapes aroused by cerulean and milky hues and oceanic tastes, Azur at Shangri La Putrajaya is the venue to find.

Reason to visit: bright ocean blue contemporary setting, Shangri La trademark service, 5 star meal at a reasonable cost
