Pork Knuckle at Weissbrau, Straits Quay Marina Mall, Penang, Malaysia

For someone who usually eats every two hours, a four and a half hour
car ride (from KL to Penang) is a long time to go without food. Turning into five and a half hours
because of a tremendous jam is even worse. But worth the tummy grumbles and “I
haven’t eaten don’t talk to me” bad humour, was our check in to Penang with Weissbrau’s phenomenal pork knuckle. The
cause of many saliva soaked pillows, the crispy skin and juicy flesh of
Weissbrau’s pork knuckle has been the protagonist of many a wet dream. There’s nothing more rewarding after a long hot drive than a chunk of pork and a cold cold beer – Schneider Weisse, only available at Weissbrau’s Penang, Kristal for the hot afternoon and Blonde for the
evening. 

For those wanting something less so un-halal, the Tomato Soup with Luegan Bread, Seamen’s Mussels and Roesti with Salmon and Sour Cream Rolls are excellent choices. I continue to be a fan of their Caesar Salad for the crisp greens seemingly plucked right before serving. It’s so fresh, I imagine hydroponic tubes lining the kitchen walls where lettuce is ready for harvesting. Wayne, the owner tells me though, that most of their produce is sourced from the Cameron Highlands. They don’t keep anything for more than a day, use no MSG and avoid all artificial colours and flavourings. The concept of healthy home cooking drives the style of the food so I guess this all has a part to play in the freshness of the cuisine. Weissbrau has a neighbourhood bistro feel. You see families, friends, young and old from all races casually admiring the marina views and enjoying simple food cooked well. The large open indoor and outdoor spaces and smiley staff create a relaxed atmosphere where all can feel at home.
