Fierce Curry House
What pops to mind when you think of biryani? Hot, sweaty, not so hygienic mamak stalls jutted with plastic tables and wafts of the gutters teasing your nose hairs? Flavourful but oily rice with bits of bone, skin and meat all mixed in and sticky overcooked unidentifiable somethings encrusting the bottom of the pot? If yes, it’s time to toss that image out and rethink your biryani experience.
Marsala Tea
Instead, conjure up a picture of wooden tables, classic Indian artwork, tiled walls, friendly homey service, a clean cool room and, silver pots of perfectly steamed rice layered with the best cuts of meat, seafood and poultry and a secret blend of herbs and spices. Meet Fierce Curry House, where the Northern Indian comfort food of biryani has been elevated to new epicurean heights.
Cold Coconut
This round at Fierce Curry House challenged our perception of this popular dish. Boston Lobster, King Prawn and Scallop Biryanis are recently perfected variations. Taste seems just as important as presentation. In this case, a giant silver pot of the lobster biryani was set upon our table. Guests leaned in with hungry anticipation as the top was removed. Gasps of awe could be heard as abundant long grain rice and a 900gm lobster was lifted and revealed. While not quite as dramatic as the unveiling of the lobster, the King Prawn and Scallop Biryani openings were just as rousing. Seafood, in all cases, was flawless in preparation and the long grains of the biryani rice maintained just enough texture to remain firm but also soak up the flavours of the seasonings and crustaceans.
Starfruit and Apple Lassis
Expect drinks too to delight any foodie. While traditional Lassis are available, Watermelon, Apple, Orange and Starfruit versions deliver attractive, thinner and more refreshing options. If you still have room, a splendid twist on Thosai and Roti will please the sweet tooth with Kaya (coconut jam), Nutella and Peanut Butter acting as fillers. Or, perhaps just one saccharine bite might be more adept in the form of Gulab Jamun, milk powder dumplings soaked in sugar syrup.
Not only were the gourmet biryanis new additions to Fierce Curry House since our last visit, we were also pleasantly surprised with new opening hours, 10:30am – 10:30pm (meaning we can now make it for dinner), Wi Fi, air con, new bathroom, ceiling fans, funky ambience music and a new “No Smoking” rule (yippee!).
