Twenty years ago the JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur first opened its doors setting a new standard in hospitality and style for the city. Situated in the heart of Bukit Bintang, the location at the time was a far cry from the business, shopping and entertainment hotspot it is today. That, though, is the vision we’ve come to expect from the YTL Group – not limited by current circumstances but inspired by what the future could be. Two decades ago the team conceived a brighter fortune for the area, and today they again look ahead with the relaunch of the hotel after the completion of a year-long refurbishment of a determinedly modern hotel, set to deliver the classic JW experience of quiet luxury and intuitive service.
Officiating the occasion was Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Francis Yeoh, Managing Director of YTL Group of Companies, Dato’ Mark Yeoh, Executive Director of YTL Hotels and from Marriott International, Inc. – Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Craig Smith, President and Managing Director of Asia Pacific and Mr. Mahmoud Skaf, Area General Manager.
A live band entertained guests throughout the evening with some surprise performances by Eric Benet and Abba adding excitement to the event. And, testimony to the standard of service offered in the hotel, guests were served a meal fit for royalty with grace and consistency, complemented by well-selected sparkling, red and white wines.
I look forward to a personal experience in the hotel at a later date, but for now I can say that the sleek new lobby shines with style, and the addition of the 300-seater Bayu Ballroom uniquely located by the poolside (the former tennis court), and including a built-in LED screen on the stage, where the official relaunch event was held are both quite stunning.
Another bonus for the hotel is the unbeatable location. Not only is it smack in the middle of Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur’s liveliest shopping, dining and entertainment district, but the hotel itself is part of Starhill Gallery, a retail complex hosting some of the most exclusive brands from around the world, integrated with a vibrant floor of food and beverage outlets.
Branded as The Happening Hotel, JW Marriott promises a luxurious stay with contemporary conveniences, old-school hospitality and a location that cannot be outdone. Stay tuned in the near future for a complete article on a staycation experience in the property.
