Werner’s Deli Food Delivery
Monica Tindall
Werner’s Deli has launched a new delivery service and it’s one we’re particularly excited about. No doubt I love the convenience of food delivery in Kuala Lumpur but the tremendous use of single-use packaging hurts so to my green core that I don’t order nearly as much as I would like to. Werner’s Deli, however, has just changed that with their new concept.
Werner’s Deli – Food Delivery Compostable Packaging
After considerable sourcing, Werner’s Deli has found plant-based, biodegradable containers that say goodbye to plastic and can go directly in your home compost bin! I don’t know about you but our compost needs more “browns” anyway. With this delivery service, I can bulk up the carbon content in my food waste bin and have the convenience of chef-prepared meals without worrying about my contribution to landfill.
Menu
Werner’s Deli lists appetizers, tapas, mains, vegetarian and booze on their delivery menu. We get a sampling across the collection and are impressed by the accuracy of the predicted delivery time (even in a heavy storm) and the heating instructions labelled on each container.
Tapas
A few bites to share begin our order and both the Spanish dishes of Tortilla Española (RM 24) and Gambas al Ajillo (RM28) offer plenty of flavour. The Spanish omelette is a nicely firm round with plentiful slices of potato inside. And, the chefs were certainly not stingy when it came to the use of garlic in the prawn dish. Fortunately, I have some great sourdough bread at home (you can order baked goodies from Werner’s Deli too) to soak up some of that delicious garlic oil.
Pasta and Rice
The Werner’s Group is known for their pork dishes so it’s only fitting to try one of their namesakes, El Cerdo Pasta (RM 48). The tangle of spaghetti is generously coated in aglio olio and the olive pork steak companion was meaty and filling.
Vegetarian
In line with their sustainable choices of compostable packaging, the team at Werner’s Deli are also working on getting more meat-free options on their menu. One tasty choice is the Paella de Verduras (RM 68). Even this veggie-loving gal was not convinced that a paella could be flavourful enough on vegetables alone, but I was pleasantly surprised by the robustness of this recipe. Prepared with zucchini, eggplant, assorted mushrooms, capsicum and green peas, and sided with lemon slices and aioli sauce (not needed though) it’s an excellent dish – highly recommend.
Mains
Lastly, from the food menu, we try the Halibut Fillet (RM 88). It’s a well-cooked specimen with a crispy skin top and moist, flaky flesh. Pasta and a white bean stew bulk up the fish into a complete meal.
Booze
You can also order booze to go with your meal from Werner’s Deli. Wine, spirits and cocktails are all for the pickings. I choose the Barton & Guestier Reserve Rosé (RM 158) as a versatile mate for our dishes. It’s fantastic with both our vegetarian choices and the halibut. It’s easy drinking with lots of berries on the nose, a balanced palate and fresh finish – an excellent choice.
Werner’s Deli Review
It’s heartwarming to see restaurants who are trying to stay afloat in challenging times continue to look at the larger picture and attempt to continue business in sustainable ways. The compostable packaging used for food delivery at Werner’s Deli will certainly sway my decision to order from them again. That, coupled with tasty food and booze available at the click of a button, and it’s a service worth bookmarking.
