Serene Silva
In this interview, Serene Silva tells us what led to the opening of Simply Serene and some of her future plans.
What do you do?
I’m Serene, owner of Simply Serene. I make nutritious plant-based breakfast and desserts available for purchase via my Instagram page. I also use the social platform to share easy veg recipes and everything related to food and wellness. I want to share that cooking and eating plants are easy and delicious.
How did you get into the industry?
After moving to Australia at 15 years old, I learned how to be independent and spent a lot of time cooking for myself, as I was the only vegetarian in my family. Even though I graduated with a design degree, I pretty much worked in the hospitality industry up until now. From Gloria Jeans Coffee, Grill’d Healthy Burgers, to Hilton Hotels. Moving back here, I saw an opportunity to create plant-based desserts as there was a growing demand for them. So that’s where I’m at.
What’s a food memory from your childhood or travels that stands out?
From my childhood, this would be my Nani’s (Grandmother in Urdu) dosa and coconut chutney.
Serene Silva‘s favourite food and beverage pairing?
I love matcha latte and A Simply Serene Banana Bread.
The perfect day off would be…
Heading out for a hike discovering beautiful waterfalls and mountains
What’s something you’d like guests to know about Simply Serene?
Simply Serene’s mission is to show the world that plant-based wellness is easy, fun and delicious. I’m still catching the waves of the KL food scene, as pre-pandemic I had been living in Australia.
How has the pandemic changed you as a person?
It has made me a stronger person, working harder towards my goals: to open a plant-based cafe and create job opportunities for the voiceless, particularly refugees. I always start the day with gratitude, because the present is a gift. Start with now.
How has the pandemic changed you as an entrepreneur?
I have to adapt to stand out and create my own trend!
What’s in store for you in the upcoming months?
Some funky granolas and plant-based tarts.
