Monica Tindall
Even with dine-in not yet allowed in Kuala Lumpur, we are spoiled with food choices for Chinese New Year 2021. Gesuto provides a little twist on tradition with its Ox Box delivery especially curated for this festive season. Serving Japanese cuisine with modern European influences, the restaurant guarantees a meal that is both exciting and delicious.
Gesuto Chinese New Year Delivery – The Ox Box
Wrapped in a giant red ribbon, The Ox Box’s unboxing is nearly as exhilarating as its contents. With delivery being the new norm, the unwrapping ceremony has become a “thing” on social media, and I am caught up in the thrill. There’s more inside, a letter in a red envelope, decorative red paper and an ornamental lacework trim.
The Ox Box (RM 298) comes with enough food that I think would comfortably feed four people. Even though it comes in disposable containers, everything is presented beautifully.
The sushi and sashimi plate is the first thing we attack. It’s superbly fresh, and we don’t even use any of the soy or wasabi that accompanies it. I presume the fish will be seasonal in each Ox Box based on the market’s freshest each day.
We probably should have begun with a more traditional start with the truffle edamame with rock salt. The world has thrown the norm out the window anyway so we think you can even launch with dessert if you want to. Hence, it’s our second picking and very, very good. It’s packed in the same container as the grilled salmon robata salmon and chicken gyoza, which too are highly satisfying.
One of the highlights, in my opinion, is the cold capellini with truffle and scallops. The thin noodles are so elegant yet still retain a little chew to the bite. I’m not sure, but I think I taste some citrus in here. It’s a dish that causes forks to clash more than once.
Three grilled lamb chops come in the same tray as the capellini as does an assortment of tempura. Sauces are packed separately, but we’re finding we don’t even remove the lids. All have plenty of flavour all on its own.
Also, there are a couple of bowls in The Ox Box. Beef short rib donburi features 24-hour sous-vide Angus short ribs and an onsen egg atop short-grain Japanese rice. The second bowl detours a little further from the Japanese foundation with truffle pappardelle. Wide pasta ribbons are coated in a decadent truffle sauce, with plentiful Parmigiana-Reggiano and nori. A soft egg must be broken and mixed in to get the optimal experience.
Bulking up the meal are a pair of Japanese buns with kombu butter and a couple of mandarins.
Lastly, and making a sweet conclusion is a petite mandarin yuzu cake. It’s just the right size and bursting with citrus flavours—a very adept ending to the meal.
Furthermore, each Ox Box order comes with a complimentary yee sang, usually priced at RM 58 if ordering ala carte. With the purchase of two boxes, a couple of bottles of still or sparkling water are thrown in, and if you order three, you’ll also find a bottle of wine included. Additionally, the Gesuto Chinese New Year Ox Box comes with a letter entitling the patron to a 15% discount the next time they dine.
Add On Booze
To complete the meal, you can also order wine at the same time with special prices paired with The Ox Box – Prosecco (RM 188), Champagne (RM 298), San Pellegrino sparkling or still water (RM 9.90) or red and white wine (RM 118). The wines are respectable French drops from Cotes-Du-Rhone.
